The Library Lowdown

The Elm Grove Public Library, established and supported by the citizens of Elm Grove, provides access to library facilities, resources, and services necessary to meet the informational, educational, and leisure needs of all the people in the community. It assembles, preserves, and administers an organized collection of print and non-print materials to fill those needs. It places special emphasis on stimulating interest and life-long appreciation for reading and learning among children and adults alike

Calling all young poets! The Friends of the Elm Grove Library Poetry Contest is underway. Start crafting your best poems today.

Do you have a child ages 4-14 who is interested in trying their hand at poetry? If so, the time is now to enter the Friends of the Elm Grove Library Poetry Contest for the chance to have their poem printed in the newspaper and forever immortalized on a bookmark. The contest is free to enter, and may be done so by filling out the entry form available at the Elm Grove Library, and submitting it with a typed or handwritten poem by March 31, 2014. Submissions should be placed in the basket marked “FOEGL Poetry Contest” located at the front desk of the Elm Grove Public Library.

The contest is open to anyone ages 4-14, and the age groups are 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and 13-14 years old. Poems will be judged on originality and creativity. There will be one winner from each age group. Judging for the contest will be done “blindly.” This means that each entry form and the attached poem will be numbered. The poem will be detached from the entry form and placed in a pile corresponding to the age group. Poems will be judged by a three person panel. Once the judges have determined the winner for each age group, the poem will be reattached to its corresponding entry form and the winner will be notified as indicated below. All decisions by the judges are final.

Winners in each age group will be announced at the Friends of the Elm Grove Library’s See a Juggler, Be a Juggler event on April 12, 2014, from 2-3 p.m. in the courtroom of the Elm Grove Village Hall. Winners need not be present, as winning poets will also be notified by email or phone after April 12.

The winner in each age category will have his or her poem printed on a bookmark to be distributed at the Elm Grove Library. The winning poems will also be published in the Elm Grove News Independent.

Note: Poems must be the child’s own work, and may not contain previously published or copyrighted material. Submissions must be in good taste and may not contain foul or offensive language. Any type of poem may be submitted, and there is not word count limitation. In the event a longer poem wins however, only an excerpt of that poem will be printed on the winning bookmark(s). All poems submitted belong to the author.
