The Library Lowdown

The Elm Grove Public Library, established and supported by the citizens of Elm Grove, provides access to library facilities, resources, and services necessary to meet the informational, educational, and leisure needs of all the people in the community. It assembles, preserves, and administers an organized collection of print and non-print materials to fill those needs. It places special emphasis on stimulating interest and life-long appreciation for reading and learning among children and adults alike

Free E-Book Resources Available on the Web

When Amazon debuted its original Kindle e-reader in November of 2007, the original price was a whopping $399, yet it sold out within hours, launching a revolution and changing the face of reading. Now seven years later, e-readers remain very popular, and e-book sales continue to rise, reaching more than billion dollars in 2013 and accounting for 27% of all adult trade book sales. People have come to love the portability and ease their e-readers offer them, as devices have become faster, lighter, and more affordable in recent years. Making it even better are the variety of easy and reliable websites that offer free downloads of popular books to your iPad, Kindle, Nook, mobile phone, or other portable device. Here are just a few examples of websites where you can download free e-books.   

Your Local Public Library

Libraries have responded to the demand for e-books by making them readily available for free check-out, potentially saving consumers a lot of money in e-book costs. The Elm Grove Public Library offers free e-books for check out through Overdrive, a free application which allows you to access borrowed e-books, audio books, and now view streaming movies, including children’s titles, on your mobile devices.

Project Gutenberg is the oldest digital library in existence, and has a selection of more than 45,000 items. All e-books been previously published by bona fide publishers, and have been digitized and diligently proofread with the help of thousands of volunteers. Many of their titles are literature classics from authors such as Dickens, Austen, and Twain.

Baen Free Library (free Science Fiction e-books)

Baen Books is a publisher of science fiction titles from popular authors such as Eric Flint, John Ringo, and David Drake. The Baen Books website provides opportunities to both purchase and download free e-books. Many of the free e-books are from well-known authors.

Bookboon provides free access to more than 1000 education related books for business professionals and students. As a global e-book publisher, Bookboon has free textbooks written by professors available for download in PDF format and in seven different languages. They are the fastest growing e-publishing company in the world, and all of their content is completely free.

Open Culture

Download 600 free eBooks to your Kindle, iPad/iPhone, computer, smart phone or ereader. Collection includes great works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, including works by Asimov, Jane Austen, Philip K. Dick, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Neil Gaiman, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Shakespeare, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf & James Joyce.

Open Library

Open Library is an online project intended to create "one web page for every book ever published". It is a project of the non-profit Internet Archive and has been funded in part by a grant from the California State Library and the Kahle/Austin Foundation. To date, they have gathered over 20 million records from a variety of large catalogs as well as single contributions, with more on the way.
