The Wright to Be Wrong

By Tony Perkins

In pulling back the veil on Barack Obama's pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Good Morning America has certainly put religion at the center of the political stage.  The IRS is already investigating Trinity United Church of Christ, where Wright presides, over various political actions.  Now the pastor's statements vilifying the United States are adding fresh fuel to the controversy. Saturday, March 15

There is no question that many of Rev. Wright's comments are unscriptural.  The New Testament instructs believers to pray for our government's well being so that we might live a quiet and peaceable life (1Timothy 2:2).  It is hard to imagine that praying, as Rev. Wright has done, for the damnation of our country is the pathway to a quiet and peaceable life.

Many Christians have been troubled for years over our nation's totally permissive abortion policies, but we have not being praying for our nation's destruction, rather we have prayed and worked for its repentance and restoration.

Rev. Wright has the right to speak even though his comments are out of keeping with the character of our national discourse.  However passionately we disagree, however much we fear the consequences of mistakes our nation has made and may yet make, none of us should wish our nation and our neighbors harm.  But even the most noxious comments should not result in calls for a pastor to be silenced or hauled before the IRS.

What this episode should do is cause every God-fearing American who loves this country to consider the spiritual influences that shape candidates for high office and to understand their importance.  We have a right to know as much as possible about the social ideas and character of those whom our presidents regard as mentors and advisers.
