A fire in Elm Grove discovered by a police officer on his way to work Monday afternoon destroyed a home in the 13000 block of Elmhurst Parkway, police said.

The Elm Grove officer saw smoke and flames coming from the basement level of the home shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to a news release from the Elm Grove Police Department.

No one was in the home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported, according to the release.

Elm Grove firefighters were assisted by those from more than a half-dozen other departments and the fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes, according to the release.

The fire was believed to have started in the basement of the home; however, the blaze was still under investigation Monday evening, according to the release.

There was no damage estimate available, but the home was a total loss, police said.
