A $100 million retail and office development proposed for the Town of Brookfield on Wednesday announced its name: The Corners of Brookfield.
The 460,000 square-foot development is to be built on 19 acres north of I-94 and east of Barker Road, in an area long known as Goerkes Corners. That site now includes a strip mall and former movie theater mall owned by developer Marcus Corp., and a former Menards home improvement store.
A 140,000-square-foot Von Maur department store that would anchor The Corners is to open in 2013, according to a statement issued by Marcus and Davenport, Iowa-based Von Maur.
“The Corners is without question the best location for our entry into Wisconsin," said Jim von Maur, president of Von Maur, in a statement.
"It has all of the key elements that are critical to us in making a major investment in a new store: excellent visibility, accessibility, convenient parking and density of households," Von Maur said.
Marcus, which hopes to begin construction later this year, has received preliminary planning approval from the Town Board for The Corners.
In addition, the Town Board will later consider a tax incremental financing district to help pay for the project. That tax district, with the specific amount of public financing, hasn't yet been proposed.
Marcus is "in talks with many other high-end national retailers" about opening stores in The Corners, said Katie Falvey, director of real estate for Marcus, in a statement. No other store or restaurant operators have yet been named for the project.
In March, an executive with Brookfield Square owner CBL & Associates Properties Inc. said the company was still trying to get Von Maur into its mall. But Von Maur executives have said repeatedly they are committed to The Corners.
