Construction of a Target store planned for Brookfield's former Quebecor World printing plant site is expected to begin within 60 days now that the project has obtained city zoning approval.
Minneapolis-based developer Ryan Cos. hopes to have the 140,000-square-foot Target open by October 2012, said Tony Barranco, Ryan's retail development director.
The Brookfield Common Council on Tuesday night granted zoning approval for the project, known as Underwood Crossing. It will include 34,200 square feet of additional retail space. Ryan hasn't yet signed leases with other retail tenants.
The former printing plant, which closed in 2006, will be demolished to make way for Underwood Crossing. The 23-acre site is at 12821 W. Blue Mound Road.
The Target will include a pharmacy, with the grocery component including fresh produce, baked goods, dairy items and prepared foods. It will likely have 150 to 200 employees.
The project site is about halfway between two Target stores, at 3900 N. 124th St., Wauwatosa, and 2600 S. 108th St., West Allis.
