Ask Now: Is Goodwill still coming to Brookfield?

Office Max has left its store on Bluemound Road

Sept. 2, 2014

Is there a rumor you'd like tracked down? Geoff Bruce answers some of the mysteries of life in Brookfield and Elm Grove and helps solve everyday problems.

A resident asks: Office Max is closing the Bluemound Road store. Awhile back there were articles that Goodwill was interested in buying the site, but Office Max's lease was kind of in the way of completing the deal. Has time moved on now and the lease is now over, and is Goodwill now going to remodel and open up another store so close to the one in Waukesha?

Answer: Goodwill is still planning on opening a store on Bluemound Road in the city of Brookfield in the near future.

In fact, Goodwill personnel were on-site Tuesday afternoon at the Office Max building, 18605 W. Bluemound Road, to talk about the potential for the future store.

Cheryl Lightholder, manager of communications for Goodwill Industries of Southeast Wisconsin, said Goodwill has wanted to establish a new store and donation center in Brookfield for over five years.

"We have been looking for the right location, and we found it," Lightholder said. "We can't wait to get open."

Office Max's lease has expired, and they sent word to Goodwill that they will be vacating the premises by Sept. 31.

Goodwill is currently in the design and permitting stage.

"Our plans are to open (the store) in the first quarter of 2015," Lightholder said.

Lightholder said the store will be a typical Goodwill store that customers are accustomed to.

"It's going to have a similar layout and donation drop-off area as our other stores," Lightholder said. "It will be open seven days a week and will have between 40-45 staff members."

Lightholder noted that the success of the Waukesha store, 1400 Nike Drive, has helped the company have faith in the future of a Brookfield store, despite the close proximity of the two sites.

"The store in Waukesha is not going to change at all," she said. "We have been very fortunate that our community has been extremely generous with their donations. We hope that this new site will offer just another convenient location for our donors and shoppers. Even though it's located close to the Waukesha store, we really don't see it as an issue at all."
