Few people imagine the day that a loved one is no longer able to care for themselves. Thankfully, families have an advocate to help care for their loved one.

David Treis of Brookfield knows firsthand what it's like to care for an ailing loved one. When his father became ill and needed assistance, he stepped in.

"I dealt with hiring all the different nurses and CNAs that he needed for his specific care," as well as overseeing his non-medical needs. Treis soon saw how intense hiring health care professionals, mitigating care, and coordinating everything could be.

After his family sold their printing business, Arandell Corp. in Menomonee Falls, Treis began looking at new business opportunities, and came across the FirstLight Home Care franchise.

"They really had an excellent brand," and were doing all of the small things that many people may not think about while caring for a loved one, he said.

Treis opened his FirstLight Home Care franchise in Brookfield in July 2015. The company offers a range of assistance services, from companion, personal, dementia, and respite care. This includes helping a person get ready in the morning, and simply having someone to talk to. Often times, "it's the little things that we sometimes take for granted" that FirstLight assists with.

Beyond care, FirstLight is an advocate in planning for all stages of a loved one's care. Planning often begins with ensuring that the family has a good understanding the person's condition. From there, FirstLight can come up with a care plan that address financial, legal, home maintenance and other facets that people may not think about.

"Once people understand that, they get a renewed understanding of how they can have a relationship (with their loved one) again," said Treis.

He adds that when it comes to ensuring optimal care, "it really comes down to putting together a plan for a family."

Treis explained that they want to be seen as the "easy button" for families, attending to nearly anything that may arise. From coordinating home maintenance through one of their strategic partners to taking a client to a movie when their family lives far away, FirstLight strives to serve to address all areas of a person's well-being. This allows family members to remain family members, not so much caregivers. As such, "they really enjoy that comfort that we offer them."

FirstLight serves residents in the greater Waukesha County area, including Lake Country, and into Milwaukee County.

At the end of the day, "the best part for me is seeing [the family's] shoulders relax and people saying 'they were able to solve my problems and let me be a family,'" said Treis. Through FirstLight, people know that someone is in their corner, which brings them peace of mind.

"That's the cool thing, being able to offer that aspect."
