Two local figure skaters qualify for Nationals

Two local figure skaters in the Wisconsin Figure Skating Club qualified for nationals at the Figure Skating Championships in Strongsville, Ohio, in early November.

Kenzie Reid of Brookfield and partner Christian Erwin of Elm Grove captured the Junior level pewter medal and have qualified for the 2013 United States National Figure Skating Championships.

"We have been working really hard on the ice every day, and we're excited and blessed to be able to represent Wisconsin at Nationals in January," said Erwin.

The 2013 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships will be held at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb., from Jan. 20 to 27.

Wentz receives tennis Mel Bergman Award

Beverly Wentz of Brookfield received the 2012 USTA/Midwest Section Mel Bergman Award on Dec. 1 at an awards banquet in Indianapolis.

Wentz has been serving tennis as a volunteer for more than 20 years. Wentz has devoted her years of dedicated service to tennis through coaching, building youth programs, promoting tennis at all levels, and serving on committees at all levels.

On a local level, Wentz served as the Brookfield Central High School assistant tennis coach from 1989 until 2012 upon her retirement. She was responsible for coaching and instruction in one of the largest high school USTA No-Cut tennis programs in the nation.

Brookfield resident on St. Leo's basketball team

The St. Leo men's basketball team has 38 percent of team hailing from state of Wisconsin. That is a higher percentage than the University of Wisconsin (21 percent) and Marquette (31 percent).

One of the local players is Brookfield resident Tom Neary, a 6-foot-7-inch, 230-pound senior forward, who attended Catholic Memorial.

AAU tryouts Dec. 15 for traveling teams

Tryouts for boys and girls AAU traveling teams for fourth through 11th graders are set for Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. at Greenfield High School Hawks Dome.

Higher Level Camps is an off-season basketball program.
