Brookfield Central's Yanasak brings home regional wrestling championship
Six Lancers advance to Saturday's sectional at Waukesha West
The Brookfield Central wrestling team finished fifth of eight teams with 113 points at the West Allis Central Regional on Saturday.
The host school won the regional with 221 points.
"I was very happy with the way the team performed," Central coach Chris Demos said. "Yes, we lost some matches that we were winning, or in a position to win, but the focus was there.
"We got six to sectionals and for as young as we are, that isn't bad. We had four wrestlers that this was their first year ever wrestling, competing on Saturday. One of them, Alex Espada, qualified."
Central had one champion, a second-place finish and four fourth-place finishes, all who are advancing to Saturday's Waukesha West Sectional.
Elliot Yanasak at 170 (25-12) placed first and scored 24 team points to lead the way. After receiving a quarterfinal bye, he beat Washington's Ulises Reyes (18-18) with an exciting 12-10 decision. Then in the title match he pinned West Allis Central's Jason Alvarez (16-13) in 5:40.
Joshua Peltier at 126 (30-9) placed second and scored 18 team points, starting out with a bye in the quarterfinal.
He beat West Allis Hale's Luke Ellis (25-12) in an 8-5 decision in the semifinal but then lost by a pin (3:41) in the title match to West Allis Central's Jose Ramos (26-11).
He then won by rule over Ellis in the second-place match.
"Elliot and Josh both wrestled well and Elliot was able to win the bracket," Demos said. "Josh was winning his finals match when he was caught and pinned in a headlock."
Mike Egan at 138 (19-17) placed fourth and scored 12 team points, the most of the four fourth-place finishers.
He opened with a quarterfinal pin (0:49) over Waukesha North's Nick Jensen (4-16), but then dropped a 12-3 major decision to Brookfield East's Josh Dempsey (34-12) in the semifinal.
He then lost the third-place match on an 8-3 decision, but bounced back to win the fourth-place match with a 16-2 major decision over Kettle Moraine's Bo Hutchinson (7-6)
Brandon Fong at 160 (12-20) placed fourth and scored 11 team points.
He won the quarterfinal with a pin (1:19) over Waukesha South's Tyler Graber (6-10) and then was pinned in the semifinal in 2:51. He lost the third-place match by a 6-4 decision but then captured the fourth-place match by rule over Graber.
Alex Espada at 120 (15-17) placed fourth and scored nine team points.
In the quarterfinal he won an 8-7 decision over Waukesha South's Brandon Mucci (22-16). He then lost twice, losing the semifinal by a 14-1 major decision and the third-place match by a 9-7 decision.
He then won the fourth-place match by rule over Mucci.
The final fourth-place finisher was Julien Selby at 152 (21-15), who scored seven team points.
He lost a 6-5 decision in the semifinal and an overtime match, 3-2, in the third-place match. He won by rule in the fourth-place match.
