When the state's No. 1 ranked team — Brookfield Central — meets the state's No. 2 ranked team — Milwaukee King — in the WIAA Sectional at 7 p.m. today at Brookfield East, motivation won't be a problem.
"This is as far as this group has gotten," coach Mark Adams said. "Now we play King and they knocked us off last year."
The Generals edged Central, 60-54, in the regional championship game at King.
King held Riley LaChance to 12 points and Caleb Mortag had 11, as Elijah Goodman was a one-man rebounding machine against the Generals and finished with 20 points.
Graduated Austin Malone-Mitchell drilled in six 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 28 points, while no other General managed to get into double figures.
"We knew what they beat us on last year and we know what we've got to do," LaChance said. "We have to focus and be a 100 times tougher. It's not going to get any easier from here. It's going to be a dogfight, so we're looking forward to it."
Central's 12 seniors know this is the third game of "win or go home," and Adams had a lot to say about this group.
"This is a great senior group," he said. "They've provided us with a lot of excitement, a lot of leadership — a great group of guys to be around, a great example of being ambassadors for our program. They've been a great group to represent Brookfield Central."
Adams has been pleased with his team's success down the stretch.
"Like I said before, you never want to peak in January," he said. "The last three or four conference games we played, I think it was our best basketball all year.
"I think we carried that right into the tournament. I don't care who we played or what the level, I've got a lot of respect for these teams."
But perhaps senior guard Brad Newman summed up the playoffs the best.
"It's just another opportunity," he said. "It's fun; I have never experienced anything like it."
