The Brookfield Central girls and boys track teams qualified in five events at the West Allis Central Sectional on May 30, and the Lancers are now off to the WIAA State Track and Field Championships on June 6-7 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse.
The Lancers finished eighth (52) in the 15-team sectional.
"There was plenty of competition and a range of emotions while trying to qualify for the state meet," said coach Lorie Lewis. "In the end, all our athletes competed exceptionally well, especially within the strength of each event.
"In fact, we had four individuals run personal records, and yet none of them qualified out for the state meet. The most significant of these was senior Danielle Kulpins who ran the race of her career in the 1600 (a 6-second PR) but got beat by 0.40 for the last qualifying position."
Central had two first-place finishes. Senior Elizabeth Flatley won the 3200 meter in 11 minutes, 3.94 seconds and then finished second in the 1600 run (4:53.61).
"Elizabeth had a terrific meet," Lewis said. "She started the day by running a career PR split in the 3200 relay. Shortly after that, she raced right at her PR in the 1600. To finish the meet off, she won the 3200. That is a heavy day for any distance runner; especially tough to accomplish at a sectional meet."
The 4x800-meter relay won (9:36.48) behind sophomore Lucy Kwiatkowski, junior Kasey Ledvorwoski, Kulpins and Flatley.
The 4x100 relay placed third (50.16) behind junior Chisom Obasih, junior Anna Cleary, senior Jennifer Fox and sophomore Cassie Jehly.
"It's very exciting for us to compile two state relay teams," Lewis said. "Given the fact our team had one true All-State athlete in Elizabeth Flatley, it became challenging for us to score in the top three positions within individual events.
"Therefore, compiling two relay teams without those high-scoring athletes is something we are very proud of. In order to get to this point, individuals on both relay teams have had significant improvements throughout the year. It will be a great experience for them to compete with the best in the state next weekend."
Speaking of the weekend, Lewis knows it will be an emotional time.
"I know Elizabeth and the rest of the team is excited to compete at state," Lewis said. "My guess is the state meet will also present a wealth of emotion for all of us as Elizabeth finishes her running career at Brookfield Central."
The only Central boy to qualify was reliable senior John Dusing, who has led a young Lancers team all season.
Dusing finished second in the 1600-run, running a time of 4:26.29.
Brookfield Central's girls track and field team advanced nine to the West Allis Central Sectionals on May 30, while the boys qualified two athletes in three events at the Kettle Moraine Regional to begin the week on May 27.
Lewis' girls had four winners, two second-place, two third-place and a fourth-place finish.
The Lancers won three individual events and one relay.
Flatley won the 3200-meter run in 11 minutes, 48.46 seconds, Kulpins won the 1600 (5:21.55) and Obasih took home the gold in the 100-meter dash (12.91 seconds).
Central's 4x800-meter relay also won (9:47.91) behind Kwiatkowski, sophomore Emma Kumer, Kulpins and Ledvorowski.
Sophomore Lucy Kwiatkowski took second in the 1600 (5:21.57), and the 4x100 relay was second behind Obasih, junior Anna Cleary, senior Jennifer Fox and sophomore Cassie Jehly.
Sophomore Rachel Hirsch in the 400 (1:02.78) and Flatly in the1600 (5:22.23) were third, and rounding out the sectional qualifiers was junior Megan Hlava, who was fourth in the 3200 (12:04.17).
Two juniors advanced for the Central boys.
Dusing finished third in the 1600 (4:38.56) and fourth in the 800 (1:59.07), and Michael Flatley was third in in the 800 (1:58.77).
