The WIAA State Track and Field Championship on June 6-7 in La Crosse marked the end of the season for Brookfield Central and the last hurrah for senior Elizabeth Flatley.

Flatley had the best day for the Lancers, finished third in the 1,600-meter run in a personal-best 4 minutes, 53.61 seconds, finishing behind freshman sensation Cami Davre of Whitefish Bay (4:51.27) and Wauwatosa East senior standout Natalie Schudrowitz (4:52.05).

"Elizabeth's third place in the 1,600 was against some extremely competitive times," coach Lorie Lewis said. "It was great to see her finish off with such a strong race."

Flatley also finished eighth in the 3,200 run (11:16.26), which Schudrowitz won in 10:39.94.

"While Elizabeth went to state with higher expectations than eighth place in the 3,200, her finish does not take away from the phenomenal four-year career she has produced.

"As tough as it was to watch her struggle in the 3200 it was in even more difficult for her to finish the race, let alone in eighth. At one point I thought she would pass out. As was true of her entire career she was going to push on regardless of the circumstances.

"She did that throughout the journey of her career. Her 3,200 run reflected much of what made her career sensational."

The 4x800-meter relay was next in line with a 17th place performance (9:45.56) behind junior Kasey Ledvorwoski, sophomore Lucy Kwiatkowski, sophomore Emma Kumer and senior Danielle Kulpins.

"The 3,200 relay took away good state meet experience." Lewis said. "Danielle Kulpins was the only senior racing and had a very solid run. The rest of the girls know they need to step it up with the loss of their outstanding seniors — Elizabeth, Danielle and Paulina Agnello. This relay gave them the opportunity to begin that process early."

The 4x100 relay took 15th in the preliminaries (49.83) behind sophomore Cassie Jehly and juniors Anna Cleary, Jessica Marciniak and Chisom Obasih.

"The 400 relay had a terrific race; they ran a season PR by breaking 50 for the first time," Lewis said. "The weather was great for sprinting and they took full advantage of it and the opportunity to race in the state meet. It was impressive to see them put together their best performance of the season."

In the end, this Lancer girls found tough to say goodbye to Flatley according to Lewis.

"It has been a great ride for all of us. Knowing your lucky to get one of these rides in lifetime makes it all the more challenging to watch the last race flicker out. Fortunate yet emotional. Lots for one weekend."

The Lancer boys only entry was junior John Dusing, who finished 13th in the 1,600-run (4:23.24). Dusing has been a standout performer all season.
