Brookfield Central girls volleyball team young, but talented

Lancers also have seven returning letter winners

The Brookfield Central girls volleyball team is talented, but young, according to coach Scott Spiess.

Central has seven letter winners returning — juniors Shannon Kebisek (second-team All-Greater Metro), Aileen Herman and Abigail Strebig, and sophomores Sarah Uczen, Katie Dobrzynski, Ellery Nordling and Marissa Zepecki.

Spiess also has plenty of promising newcomers in juniors Audra Geis, Angelina Ledezma and Lydia Sterle, and freshmen Cami Herman and Miranda Wucherer.

"I believe that we are talented at all six positions on the floor, but we are young and it will likely take us some time to learn how to play together," Spiess said. "This is a good group of kids that we're going to challenge to work extremely hard.

Defense and serving key for Lancers

"We hope to make our opponents truly earn every point by playing good defense and putting pressure on them with aggressive serving," Spiess said. "We will need to establish who will be our "go to" players in crunch time, but I like our versatility and athleticism as a group."

Kebisek will be moving to outside hitter after spending the last few years splitting time between setter and rightside attacker. She has displayed strong leadership skills coming into the season.

Spiess is also excited about two talented freshman in Herman and Wucherer.

"Both players have strong fundamentals at the setting position and can score points as attackers," he said. "They have high volleyball IQs for such young players, and see the floor well."

Herman's club team, Milwaukee Sting 14 Black, won an AAU National Championship in June and she was named an All-American.

Spiess has a Sister Act II to look forward to and he is hoping the results are as good as the first act when Britney and Taylor Held played for Central.

"Aileen and Cami Herman will attempt to leave their own legacy on Lancer volleyball," he said. "The last time BC had sisters on the team, the team rose to become one of the best in the area."
