Brookfield Academy wrapups: Dec. 3

Dec. 3, 2012

The BA fencing team was well represented at the Nov. 17 Catholic Memorial Invitational in Waukesha. Ten fencers competed in men's and women's foil and épée against teams from all over the Midwest.

Junior Saify Sobhani finished 24th out of 64 in men's épée, and sophomore Charlene Dysktra finished 27th out of 49 in women's foil. In women's épée, sophomore Jemma Kloss finished 21st out of 39.

This was the first meet of the season for many of the BA fencers including freshmen Nico Konitch and Megan Kratoska, who competed in men's and women's foil, respectively.

The Blue Knight fencers had their first taste of team fencing at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill., on Saturday. The women's foil team got off to a good start with a comfortable 10-6 win over Marion Catholic of Chicago. They fought to an 8-8 tie in bouts with Deerfield only to lose 59-57. Indiana's Culver Military Academy steamrollered over them 15-1 before they bounced back and defeated New Trier 12-4. They finished with a 10-6 loss to University Lab School of Chicago.

All the girls won multiple bouts, with sophomore Emily Bannister leading with a 13-7 record.

The men's épée team had a tougher time against some strong opposition, and with two of its team new to the weapon. They fought hard, led by Saify Sobhani, and raised eyebrows with some surprising upsets, particularly by new team member sophomore Jack Hughes.

The next meet is at Maine West High School in Des Plaines, Ill., on Dec. 8.
