Jr Lancer Cheerleaders support Ellie's Effort to Find a Cure!

The Brookfield Youth Junior Lancer Cheerleaders (BYJLC) are proud to support their cheer sister Ellie Kumer in "Ellie's Effort to Find a Cure" benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)!

BYJLC is currently holding a Penny War between their 1st - 3rd Grade, 4th - 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade, and 8th Grade teams to raise funds to help JDRF improve the lives of those with diabetes and to raise money towards a cure.

Finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes is an attainable goal - and BYJLC & Ellie's Efforts to Find a Cure would like to ask the community to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) through their annual Walk to Cure Diabetes. JDRF is a global leader in diabetes research and continues to make many advances in Type 1 Diabetes research to date.

Ellie was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was just 3 years old. Even after 5 years, family and friends are still unaware how much is involved in Ellie’s daily routine to stay alive. They seem surprised that Ellie's parents, Beth & Ken, still wake up several times at night to check her blood sugar to ensure she is as stable as possible. Even good friends ask why Ellie still needs to worry about how many strawberries or potato chips she eats. And Ellie’s young friends don’t understand why she can’t come to a sleepover at their house like all the other girls. It is not a condition she will grow out of, her routine is permanent. She can’t take a vacation from it – not even one day off.

Ellie's family continues to be proud of the way Ellie deals with her medical condition on a daily basis. Some people say it was good that she was diagnosed so young, because she doesn’t remember life without diabetes. But if you ask Ellie, the main reason she wants to find a cure is so that she doesn’t have to worry about what and when she eats. She doesn’t want to stop and check her blood sugar several times a day. She just doesn’t want to deal with it. She may make it look easy, but it is the farthest thing from it.

Beth & Ken purchased Ellie a new insulin pump earlier this year. They are impressed by the advancement in diabetes care, but make no mistake: Insulin is not a cure. Insulin pumps make life easier, but they do not replace the need for pricking fingers for blood sugar checks, counting carbohydrates in food, balancing insulin needs with exercise, or carrying around an arsenal of supplies to battle diabetes 24/7. The pump does not regulate Ellie’s blood sugar or dose her insulin. It is just a tool to help make those chores easier.

Ellie's Efforts to Find a Cure will continue to Walk and raise money for JDRF until a cure is found. You can support Ellie's Efforts by donating online at:

Or send a check made out to JDRF and mail it to:

Your donation is tax deductible, and Ellie's Efforts welcomes anyone who would like to join their Walk team and help raise money. If you are unable to join the Walk, but would still like to help, Ellie's Efforts will collect donations through October 31st, 2010. Thank you for your support!
